Having been here in the USA for quite a few months now, I have been exposed to the ongoing election process and politics that currently seem to dominate the news channels. The potential presidential candidates, like the politicians in Australia, have no qualms in making eloquent speeches and promising “change” and reforms, all in the race to win votes. However once elected, watch how quickly these changes and reforms actually happen.
In the campaign launch for the 1987 federal election in Australia, one of the most famous promises in our national politics was made. Bob Hawke during one of his speeches said, “By 1990, no Australian child will be living in poverty”. The year 1990 came and went, and the left’s failure to deliver on the promise became obvious. There is some debate on the definition of the poverty line, however the child poverty rate has barely changed since the Hawke pledge and in fact Australia is lagging behind many Western nations in tackling it.
Perhaps the current candidates here in the USA have not been so stupid as to make a promise such as the one that continues to haunt Bob Hawke, however the commitment to “change” so often made by the politicians IMHO means absolutely nothing. In Australia we have the Liberal and the Labour party, but these days the differences between the two parties is very small. When voting it feels like it really doesn’t matter who gets in, as their promises mean nothing, and really it’s about voting for the best of a bad lot and about trying to determine who will do the LEAST damage to the country.
In Australia the Labour party or “leftists” traditionally champions of the poor, after many years of trying to make the world a better place and not succeeding, have given up any pretence of concern for the poor. To me, the politicians here in the USA are the same. Can they really do anything to improve poverty, to help the lives of the working class? Can any of them, left or right, improve issues that have been ongoing for years?
I believe that the most one can hope for when choosing a presidential candidate, is to determine which one will protect the country as best as they can, and who will not take away any of your constitutional rights. So my final word, be careful who you vote for, don’t fall for empty promises, that all politicians like to make and consider that the politician promising the least amount of change, may be the most honest and may be the one worthy of your vote.
